FreeWills charges nothing. The next-lowest paid prices were TenMinuteWill at £59.99 including VAT (individual check by a professionally qualified will writer after purchase) and Make a Will Online at £60 (individual solicitor check). What separates cheap wills is who checks them, updates, printing and storage, not whether the will can be valid. ## What does each online will cost? Mostly the human element and the paperwork after the download. The cheapest services prepare the document and leave you to check, print, sign and store it, while dearer ones add someone who reads your answers, a printed copy, storage or a subscription for later changes. A check of the finished document is not advice on your circumstances, such as tax, trusts or who could claim against your estate, so ask any provider what its check covers. Which?’s self-service price does not include its specialist review, which costs more. **Storage.** Only the signed paper original is your will, and none of the cheapest services keeps it for you as standard. You can store it safely at home and tell your executors where it is, or deposit it with HM Courts and Tribunals Service for a one-off £24, according to [GOV.UK’s storage guidance](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/store-a-will-with-the-probate-service/how-to-store-a-will-with-the-probate-service) (updated 13 July 2026). Refund terms also differ, from a money-back guarantee to losing the right to cancel once the document is generated. Whatever you use, a changed will must be signed and witnessed again. ## Can you make a will for free? Yes. FreeWills publishes a £0 price for its will and updates, and says affiliate commission on add-on products, partnerships and advertising fund the service. MyIntent’s price list shows a free Basic Will for people who register through a qualifying charity’s page. Charity campaigns such as Free Wills Month and Will Aid also help with simple wills: the [Competition and Markets Authority](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/what-to-consider-when-buying-will-writing-services/what-to-consider-when-buying-will-writing-services) says they usually cover the cost of a simple will and ask for a voluntary donation to charity. [GOV.UK](https://www.gov.uk/make-will/writing-your-will) says you can write your will yourself but should get advice if it is not straightforward. Paying more is worth it when it buys something you need: a person checking your will, advice on your circumstances, or a document an automated form cannot produce. For a simple will, a correctly signed cheap or free will has the same legal effect as an expensive one. - **A second pair of eyes.** If you would value someone reading your answers, Make a Will Online’s £60 will, which includes a solicitor check, costs £25 more than SwiftWill’s single will at the published prices, and other services add a will-writer or specialist check. - **Advice.** GOV.UK lists situations where you should get advice, including sharing property with someone who is not your spouse or civil partner, a dependant who cannot care for themselves, possible claims from a second spouse or children from another marriage, a home outside the UK, property overseas and owning a business. A solicitor, or a service that includes an advice appointment such as MyIntent, fits these better than any automated will. - **Trusts and tax.** Wills with trusts and inheritance tax planning cost more everywhere because they need individual drafting. Buy them if they help you, not because they make a will valid. If none of these apply, the cheapest route is a reasonable choice, provided you check the preview carefully, sign it correctly and keep the original safe. Ask what the price includes and what you will pay in total. The [CMA’s guidance on buying will-writing services](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/what-to-consider-when-buying-will-writing-services/what-to-consider-when-buying-will-writing-services) sets out what to check: 1. Whether a one-off fee covers everything you need, and whether any hourly rate has an agreed limit. 2. Whether VAT is included. At least one provider in our table lists prices plus VAT. 3. Whether a subscription for storage or updates renews automatically, how you are charged and how you cancel. 4. Whether any extra service has been pre-ticked at checkout. 5. Your 14-day right to cancel an online purchase, which you may lose if you ask for the will to be supplied sooner. The CMA also says it is against the law to advertise a price and then add non-optional fees later in the sales process. Yes, if it is made and signed correctly: validity depends on the signing, not the price or who drafted it. Under [section 9 of the Wills Act 1837](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Will4and1Vict/7/26/section/9) a will must be in writing and signed by you, or on your direction, in the presence of two witnesses present at the same time, who then sign.
