Yes, if it is drafted for England and Wales law, completed accurately, and signed in the presence of two independent witnesses who then sign in your presence. Most template failures come from wrong-jurisdiction documents, messy handwritten amendments, and signing errors — not from the word “free”.

A simple template typically cannot handle substitute beneficiaries (what happens if your first choice dies before you), guardians for children, trusts holding a child’s inheritance until 21 or 25, specific gifts to several people, or exclusion statements. If any of these apply, a personalised will is the safer route.

Strongly discouraged. Handwritten amendments made after signing are not valid unless the amendment itself is signed and witnessed like a will — and messy alterations are a classic ground for disputes. If anything changes, print a fresh document and re-sign it.
