A lower price does not establish equivalent service. “Two wills” can mean different products: Farewill’s online pair is individually prepared, while SwiftWill’s pair shares instructions. Which? starts with self-service and charges separately for reviewed packages. TenMinuteWill publishes prices plus VAT; the totals shown add VAT at 20%. What does a will cost from each type of provider?
The biggest difference in price is between services where software checks your answers, services where a person reads the finished will, and services that include advice. The table groups the services we checked; each provider’s own page is linked in the table above.

Mirror wills for a couple usually cost less than two single wills, but “two wills” can mean mirror wills that share instructions or two separately prepared wills. Which extras affect the total?
Printing, storage of the signed original and update subscriptions are the usual extras. None is needed for a valid will: the CMA’s guidance says extra services such as storage and update subscriptions are not necessary for a valid will and you do not have to buy them from the business that writes it.

Storage. You can keep the original safely at home and tell your executors where it is. GOV.UK says HM Courts and Tribunals Service charges a one-off £24 to deposit a will (guidance updated 13 July 2026). If you pay a business for storage, the CMA suggests checking where the original is kept, the cost, any fee for taking it out and what happens if the business stops trading. See where to store a will.
Subscriptions. Before agreeing to a storage or update subscription, check whether it renews automatically, how you will be charged and how to cancel before and after renewal. Cancelling an update subscription does not cancel a signed will.
Executors. Writing a will and administering an estate are separate services. The CMA says appointing a professional executor is not a legal requirement, that the estate is charged when the service is needed, and that you can choose a family member instead.
What does a solicitor charge for a will?
There is no published market rate to quote. The SRA Transparency Rules (version in effect from 11 April 2025) make regulated firms publish costs for services such as residential conveyancing and uncontested estate administration, but not will writing. The CMA’s guide gives no price range; it suggests getting quotes from at least three will writers and checking what a one-off fee includes, whether an hourly rate has an agreed limit and what you will pay in total.
Two services in our comparison that include a regulated firm or an advice appointment publish starting prices: Co-op Legal Services from £149 (last verified 24 September 2026) and MyIntent at £249 including VAT. Trusts, tax planning and complex family arrangements are quoted separately everywhere.
Do will prices include VAT?
Most providers we checked publish a single total. TenMinuteWill lists £49.99 + VAT for a single will and adds VAT before payment, so the table shows £59.99. Some providers state that VAT is included, and at least one says it is not VAT registered. The CMA says it is against the law to advertise a price and then add non-optional fees later in the sales process, so ask for the total before you pay.
How do you compare services fairly?
